Kolkata rape-murder case highlights: Supreme Court slams Kolkata police for delay in registering FIR; doctors are told to join work

The Supreme Court instructed the CBI to file a fresh status report on the Kolkata rape-murder case and also ordered the immediate removal of the victim’s photos from social media; TMC government wants to instil fear among doctors, says doctors’ association.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra during the second day of hearing on alleged sexual assault and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in Kolkata

The Supreme Court on Monday (September 9, 2024) ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a fresh status report in connection with the murder and alleged rape of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

A Bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud also ordered the protesting doctors to resume work by 5 pm tomorrow failing which the State government will be authorised to take adverse action against them. This directive followed senior advocate Kapil Sibal’s submission that 23 individuals have died due to inadequate medical treatment.

However, the top court also instructed the West Bengal government to address doctors’ concerns and ensure their safety and security. This involves installing CCTV cameras, establishing restrooms, and implementing other necessary structural improvements.

Justice for RG kar

Earlier, the Centre filed an application in the apex court alleging “unpardonable” non-cooperation by the West Bengal government. In its application, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has termed the alleged non-cooperation of the TMC government as an example “symptomatic of a systemic malaise” and sought a direction to the State authorities to extend full cooperation to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

On August 20, the court termed the rape and murder as “horrific” and issued a slew of directions including setting up a 10-member National Task Force to formulate a protocol for ensuring the safety and security of doctors and other healthcare professionals.

The incident occurred on August 9 and the trainee doctor was found dead in the hospital’s seminar hall which led to nationwide protests
